Listraban is what we who live here call the little enclave of Listria Park and Martaban Road. A short stroll from Stoke Newington Station and the busy A10, its 135 households are a world apart.
Turn into Listria Park from Manor Road and at once you notice the sense of peace. Traffic noise falls away, blocked by the bulk of Gaitskell House on the corner. The street before you is not on the way to anywhere. It dips, then turns and heads back to where it came from. On the skyline are the treetops of Abney Park, 32 acres of woodland punctuated by weathered tombstones.
As a community, we tend to know each other. We socialise. Where we can, we support. Once a month we close the street for our children to play. Once a year we bring out tables and take lunch together. At Christmas we sing carols in approximately four-and-a-half-part harmony. It never ever rains.
In May 2020, at the height of coronavirus, Listraban was more apart than usual. A Slog Films documentary film team recorded us in lockdown. It’s not a bad way of meeting us. Click on the image below to visit us on YouTube.
